A ninth-grade student at Taft High School, Dominic Hernandez, tragically passed away early Sunday morning after a car accident. As a member of the Taft Raider Football team, Dominic was known to be a popular and well-liked individual. He was the third family member to play for the school’s team.
A vigil is planned for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the crash site, and a memorial service will be held on April 29 to remember and honor Dominic’s life.
The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Dominic Hernandez’s death resulted from injuries sustained in the accident, which occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday in the 7200 block of Culebra Commons.
Various Taft High School-affiliated Twitter accounts, including those for the school itself, Taft Raider Football, and Taft Athletic Training, shared heartfelt condolences with Dominic’s family during this difficult time.
“There are no words….Rest in Peace Dominic. U will be sorely missed, but Not Forgotten! Prayers Up,” the Taft Raider Football account Tweeted on Tuesday.
A preliminary report from SAPD stated that Hernandez was in the back seat of a white 2011 BMW sedan speeding southbound on Culebra Commons. The car took a curve too quickly, leading to a collision with the concrete base of a safety rail.
Hernandez was thrown from the vehicle, landing approximately 15 feet below the road in a culvert. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at 3:46 a.m. on Sunday.
There were no other vehicles involved in the accident, and no further injuries reported. Authorities are currently investigating the crash.
