No one wanted the Loyd Star head football job more than Adam Smith. Last week, the Lincoln County School Board made his dream come true by approving him as the new head coach for Hornet football.
A 2008 graduate of the school, Smith has spent the last three seasons as the head coach at Ethel High. Prior to that, he was an assistant coach at Loyd Star.
The excitement in Hornetville isn’t just about Smith’s appointment; it’s also about the new assistant coaches joining him. Smith’s high school classmates and teammates, Dustin Sisco and John Smith, will be part of his coaching staff, bringing familiarity to the program and the school.
Dustin Sisco, a holdover from Brian Ford’s previous staff, and John Smith, who served as head football coach last season at Salem Attendance Center, are joining the Loyd Star coaching team. Additionally, Josh Thibodeaux is returning as an assistant coach after a lengthy tenure at Franklin County.
Thibodeaux was the head coach when Adam Smith, John Smith, and Sisco were all juniors in high school. The trio played for various coaches throughout their high school years, including Sidney Wheatley, Wade Henderson, Wayne Rogers, Thibodeaux, and Ryan Ross.
As a Loyd Star alumnus, Adam Smith aims to bring long-term stability to the program, something he didn’t experience as a player.
“It’s all about the relationships,” said Smith. “I met the kids last week and we’re going to start our spring practices on Monday and work towards a jamboree at Southern Miss on May 20. The kids are excited and ready to get to work.”
Loyd Star recently wrapped up six years under the guidance of former coach Ford, who achieved a 42-42 record in six seasons and secured two Region 7-2A titles. Ford was recently announced as the head football coach at Southeast Lauderdale High.
Smith started his career as a volunteer assistant at Sumrall High while studying at USM. He then spent a year coaching at Enterprise with Thibodeaux under head coach Brooks Burns.
