During an after-school football jamboree at Cordova High School on Thursday night, attendees were sent into a panic as gunshots rang out. Memphis police reported to the scene around 8:20 p.m. during a game featuring Ridgeway High and Sheffield High.
What Happened?
Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) revealed that an individual discharged shots into the air from the stadium’s parking area. Video footage captured the frightening moment, showing the initial chaos that ensued.
Authorities shared that two vehicles fled the scene shortly after. They later apprehended one vehicle at a nearby gas station, resulting in the arrest of one adult, Cameron Kimbrough, 19, and three juveniles on weapons-related charges.
Charges & Arrests
- Cameron Kimbrough received a misdemeanor citation for unlawful possession of a firearm and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
- The arrested juveniles faced various charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm, theft of property, vehicle violations, and reckless driving. They were subsequently taken to a juvenile detention facility.
Thankfully, no injuries or property damage occurred during the incident, but the traumatic event left many attendees in deep distress.
A witness and colleague from Action News 5 recounted the fear and uncertainty that spread amongst the crowd, with many scrambling to find their loved ones and ensure their safety. The witness expressed the gravity of the moment, highlighting the immediate concern about potential danger following the gunshots.
Safety Measures & Response
MSCS clarified that the involved minors were not students of Cordova High School. School resource officers were on site during the incident, and around 25 Shelby County Sheriff deputies were present at the event.
Reiterating their commitment to safety, MSCS has invested nearly $40 million over the past two years in safety enhancements, which include upgraded camera systems, enhanced safety technology, additional fencing, and more security personnel.
Carolyn Jackson, Chief of Safety and Security, emphasized the district’s dedication to ensuring a secure environment at games. MSCS has implemented measures like metal detectors, a clear-bag policy, and a strict prohibition on weapons on school grounds. Jackson stated, “We want events to be enjoyable and entertaining with safety as the top priority.”
Other Events
Gunshots at Cordova High Football Jamboree overshadowed other events on Thursday. While the Cordova Stadium welcomed games from 12 schools, a dispute arose between Hillcrest and Westwood High players at Whitehaven Stadium. In contrast, Kirby Stadium’s six games proceeded without issues.
