Eric Sanders has been appointed as the new head football coach at Palmetto High School, confirmed by the school’s athletic director, Bryan Wilkes, to our ABC7 Sports Department.
Sanders steps into the role previously held by Jim Webb, who served as interim head coach after the sudden departure of West in March. Despite Webb being offered an interview, he chose not to pursue the permanent position. Wilkes only began the search for a new coach two weeks before the start of spring football.
Interestingly, Sanders had just accepted the head coaching job at Braden River High School four months ago, where he had been an assistant coach for 12 years before taking the lead role. Now Eric Sanders Named New Head Coach at Palmetto High School Football.
Wilkes expressed his excitement about hiring Sanders, saying, “When we started the interview process, we received many resumes. Coach Sanders was one of the finalists and stood out. He is dedicated and hardworking. He’s already hit the ground running, making positive strides in our program.”
Sanders shared his enthusiasm in a statement: “I am grateful for my 12 years at Braden River and proud of my time as head coach there. The opportunity at Palmetto High School is incredibly exciting. The tradition and community here are unmatched, and I am honored to be the new head coach.”
Previously, under West’s leadership, the Tigers ended the 2023 season with a 5-5 record, losing three of their last four games and exiting in the first round of the playoffs against Riverview.
Sanders will also teach at Palmetto, continuing his dual role from Braden River. He is quickly settling in, with plans to have his players on the practice field by Tuesday.
