Westview High School’s head football coach, Jamal Jones, is under investigation for allegedly waking players by shaking and slapping them early in the morning during an overnight football camp at Linfield University.
Around 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the McMinnville Police Department conducted a “welfare check” at the camp, which was hosting multiple high school football teams. While the police did not initially identify the coach, they later confirmed he is also a police officer with the Hillsboro Police Department. The incident is currently being investigated to determine if any criminal offenses occurred.
The Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) lists Jamal Jones as the head coach of Westview’s football program. The Beaverton School District announced on Tuesday afternoon that it has placed Jones on administrative leave pending the investigation.
The Hillsboro Police Department acknowledged the allegations against Jones, noting that he was not acting in his capacity as a police officer at the time. They confirmed that he is on leave while the investigation proceeds.
This is Jones’ first year as Westview’s head football coach. He previously led the football programs at Franklin High School in Portland and Arcata High School in California, where he coached for six years, according to Westview High School’s website.
