A high school football player from Kentucky tragically passed away after sustaining a head injury during a practice game last week.
The Kentucky High School Athletic Association expressed their condolences on Facebook, joining the family, friends, and teammates in mourning the loss of Andrew Dodson, a varsity football player from Pulaski County High School.
“No words can explain, justify or rationalize tragedies such as these,” the association wrote.
Alan Dodson informed the Lexington Herald-Leader that during his son’s team spring game, he was carrying the ball when a teammate tackled him.
“It was not a violent hit or helmet-to-helmet. It was a simple, clean tackle,” Alan Dodson said. “His head hit the turf, and Andrew suffered blunt-force trauma to the brain.”
“KHSAA is a family of its member schools, their administrators, coaches, teachers and fans. But most importantly and as the primary focus, the student-athletes. Andrew Dodson was a member of this family,” the statement said in addition. “Today, we all mourn with his family, friends, teammates and the entire KHSAA family, the loss of this young man.”
As reported by WKYT, Andrew Dodson played as a tight end and defensive end for the Maroons during his junior year.
University of Kentucky’s head football coach, Mark Stoops, expressed his heartfelt condolences following the tragic passing of Dodson.
Mark Stoops took to Twitter to share his sentiments, writing, “Our sympathies and prayers are with the family, friends and teammates of Andrew Dodson, a member of the Pulaski County football team. We are heartbroken by this tragedy and are deeply sorry for your loss.”
