According to an article by Dave Wilson on ESPN, Hill, the former varsity football coach at Rockwell, recently led his team to victory in the 2023 Texas HS BBQ State Championship. This achievement comes just three years after Hill made the transition from coaching football to coaching barbecue.
Hill’s team, named 205 Pitmasters Team Smoke, represented Rockwall Independent School District’s Dr. Gene Burton College and Career Academy. They competed against 92 other teams in the championship, which took place on May 6. In an exhilarating triumph, Hill’s team was crowned the grand champion of the competition.
The Texas High School BBQ State Championship is sponsored by Goodstock, a company owned by Nolan Ryan, a celebrated Hall of Fame pitcher. This sponsorship highlights the significance and popularity of barbecue in Texas.
