Chiles High School’s football team has received an invitation to kick off its season in Dublin, Ireland, in August 2024, where they will play against another U.S. team at Donnybrook Stadium. They are currently awaiting approval from the school district to begin fundraising and planning for the trip.
This game will coincide with the Aer Lingus College Football Classic featuring Florida State and Georgia Tech on August 24, 2024. Chiles could become the first Florida public school to join the event, following Miami Belen Jesuit and Community School of Naples, with the latter returning to Ireland this fall.
Chiles’ opponent is yet to be determined, as schools from across the U.S. have been invited to participate. They may even face the AFI Academy, an American football academy in Ireland.
As many as 12 schools have taken part in this event previously. According to Global Football founder Patrick Steenberge, the trip will offer players an educational experience, allowing them to explore Ireland and attend the FSU/Georgia Tech game.
Global Football, the company extending the invitation, has facilitated international games for over 350 American football teams across 28 countries in the past 27 years.
The participating schools are encouraged to bring their marching bands, cheerleaders, and other athletic teams along.
Last season, Chiles finished 5-5, barely missing the Class 4S state playoffs. The Timberwolves had 12 All-Big Bend selections, with senior Tre’avis Jones earning the title of 2022 All-Big Bend Offensive Player of the Year.
