Cheer on, Tennessee Volunteers fans! The thrilling news we’ve all been waiting for is here: the highly-skilled five-star receiver Mike Matthews commits to Tennessee! This gifted athlete, the target of top-tier universities like USC, Clemson, and Georgia, has made his choice. In an exciting turn of events, Matthews has decided to don the Volunteers’ jersey, igniting a wave of optimism for the upcoming seasons.
After touring all these potential football homes throughout June, Matthews’ last stop was Tennessee on June 23rd. That visit seems to have sealed the deal, marking the Volunteers’ first five-star commitment of the current cycle.
Matthews’ relationship with Tennessee goes back to May 2022 when he was first offered a spot. He attended a winning game against Alabama in October, came back for another visit in January, and even joined a spring practice in March. All these actions reflected his increasing interest in the team.
This football prodigy, measuring 6-1 and 180 pounds, is a force to reckon with. According to 247Sports, Matthews is ranked 13th in the 2024 class, stands as the fourth-best receiver, and is the third-ranked player coming out of Georgia.
Matthews’ versatility was on full display during his junior year. He caught 48 passes, amounting to 1,031 yards with 10 touchdowns, and even showed his mettle in defense as a safety. Not just confined to the gridiron, Matthews is a multi-sport athlete, participating in track and basketball.
Matthews is the second receiver to declare his allegiance to Tennessee this cycle, following four-star Braylon Staley’s commitment a few weeks prior. With Matthews now committed, the attention shifts to receiver Amari Jefferson, who will announce his decision on August 5th. Should Jefferson follow Matthews’ lead, the Volunteers will be looking at one of the strongest receiver classes in the country.
