As the summer heat continues, Orange County football season 2023 is already making waves. Practices for most teams start this Monday, setting the stage for a thrilling fall season. The action kicks off on August 17, during what’s known as Week 0, with two riveting games on Thursday, followed by a marathon of twenty-seven games on Friday, August 18. Get ready for an unforgettable season!
As per CIF-SS office rules, teams playing in Week 1 can start practicing from August 7. Before their season debut, every team must complete 14 days of practice, including 10 days before participating in any scrimmage. Also, each player needs a minimum of 10 days practice before playing in a game. Teams can engage in full-contact activity twice a week, with a 45-minute cap on each session.
Edison and Villa Park, two Orange County teams, have exciting season openers in Hawaii during the Week 0. Villa Park will face Damien of Honolulu on August 11 in Oahu, while Edison, known for its regular Hawaii visits, will play against Baldwin in Maui on August 12.
Reflecting on last season, five O.C. teams clinched CIF Southern Section championships in 2022: Yorba Linda, Laguna Hills, Northwood, Laguna Beach, and Whittier Christian.
As we gear up for the Orange County football season 2023, it’s important to note that this year serves as the final curtain call for the existing football league structures. Starting from the 2024 season, a new era will dawn, where teams will find themselves reshuffled into leagues, each determined by their performance over the preceding two seasons. The only constant in this wave of change will be the Trinity League, steadfast in its commitment to retain its current format.
